Guidelines for the management of primary bone cancer

British Sarcoma Group

The British Sarcoma Group (BSG) is an association which brings together specialist clinicians, healthcare professionals and other professionals who are involved in the treatment of sarcoma patients in the UK, as well as researchers and academics in roles relating to sarcoma.

Together, this expert group review the evidence and come to a collective agreement on best practice for the management of sarcomas, making recommendations to support decisions around management, treatment and service delivery.

These recommendations are delivered within a series of guidelines for the different types of sarcoma, including bone sarcoma (primary bone cancer), soft tissue sarcoma and GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumour, a rare type of sarcoma affecting the wall of the digestive system).

The BSG’s ‘UK guidelines for the management of bone sarcomas’ are a reference for the standard of clinical care which should be delivered to all patients with primary bone cancer (also referred to as primary malignant bone tumours) and giant cell tumour of the bone (GCTB) in the UK, throughout diagnosis, treatment and beyond. They are updated in line with evolving evidence and changes to practice, with the most recent version (an update to the 2016 guidelines) released in November 2024.
