Last year our amazing supporter, Anna Keep, and her family took part in the Yorkshire One Peak Challenge as part of the Yorkshire Three Peaks #TeamBonesTrek and raised an incredible £1,000 in memory of Jude Anderton.
Jude was 11 years old when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and sadly passed away in February 2018. Since then, Jude’s family and friends have taken part in multiple fundraising events and challenges in his memory. Including the Yorkshire One Peak and Three Peak challenge. We interviewed Anna to find out more about their challenge and what it meant to them. Why did you decide to take on the Yorkshire One Peak challenge for the Bone Cancer Research Trust?
As keen supporters of the Bone Cancer Research Trust, we have done a number of fundraising activities in memory of Jude Anderton (#bemorejude). But this one was the first event that we did specifically for the kids to take on a challenge. They were so proud to see their sponsorship money rolling in, along with fantastic messages of encouragement from their supporters.
Did you do any training to prepare and how did you feel on the morning of the event?
We did training walks before the event with the kids to help create awareness (as well as train their little legs). On the morning of the walk, the children were a bit nervous, but the warm-up and briefing from the charity team instantly got them in the mood!
How did you and your children find the challenge?
The walk itself was difficult enough to be challenging for them, but not too difficult that they got discouraged. There was a real team atmosphere, with everyone pulling together and ‘no troll left behind’ The guides were fantastic - really patient with the kids, and great company. They made the walk a real pleasure.
The guides were super supportive and look after you the whole way too - so with a positive mind (and lots of sweets) it’s a brilliant event for those new to mountain walking, or kids to take on to support.
How did you feel when you reached the end?
By the time we reached the end, we had a real sense of achievement - and the welcome we received from the Bone Cancer Research Trust team when we arrived back was just what we needed.
We’d definitely recommend it - thanks BCRT!
