A team of equestrians hopped on the saddle to complete a 190-mile coast to coast cycle challenge in memory of Lulu Blundell, who passed away from Ewing sarcoma at just 19 years old.

The group of six from the Shire Horse Society, of which Lulu's grandad is a longstanding member, completed the route in four days by cycling from Liverpool Albert Dock to the Flamborough Head in Bridlington.

They stopped off at Cannon Hall Farm and Sledmere House, two approved centres, both of which provided a place to rest and recuperate before continuing with their enormous journey.

Organiser Victoria Clayton was joined by fellow club members Helen Preece, Helen Yates, Ruth Burgess, Rhys Griffiths, and Greg Rawlins.

Farmer Ruth Burgess, from Cannon Hall Farm in Barnsley, is often seen on television shows and can be seen competing with the farms Shires.

Victoria shared that, despite the many obstacles along the way, they were a forced to be reckoned with as they made their way across the country.

We were absolutely blown away by the support we received, it really drove us on. We had hills, monsoons, warm sun, crashes, punctures, injuries... but we pushed on for Mike and for Lulu. The encouragement we received meant more to us than words can express.

Siobhan Cullen, Regional Relationship Manager at the Bone Cancer Research Trust, said:

We are so grateful to the Shire House Society for taking on this incredible challenge in memory of Lulu. On behalf of all future patients, their families and all of us here at the charity, I would like to wish a heartfelt thank you to such wonderful supporters. You are all truly invaluable in our fight against this cruel disease.

The Shire Horse Society is a charity working to protect the rare breed of Shire horse, and supporting a fellow charity in Lulu's memory was important to its members.

This incredible team have raised £7,553 and counting towards our vital work to help find kinder and more effective treatments for patients like Lulu.

Lulu, from Rotherham, was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma in 2019 when she was just 15 years old. Her treatment involved intensive chemotherapy, which was followed by the amputation of her leg.

She began receiving clear scans until developing pain in her shoulder at university, which she initially believed was a sports injury.

Heartbreakingly, a CT scan revealed that the cancer was back and had spread throughout her body. Lulu passed away peacefully on New Years Day 2023 surrounded by her family and friends.
