Funding Remit
The Bone Cancer Research Trust are dedicated to improving the outcomes for patients with primary bone cancer. One of the main ways in which we aim to do this, is by funding cutting edge research. Our funding is dedicated to projects that are genuinely centered around improving knowledge of this disease, with a clear line of sight to patient benefit and with good prospects of being published in high impact journals.
We fund research into the causes of the disease, research looking at cures and treatments and also research looking at care and quality of life and improving diagnosis. We fund basic ideas through to translational research projects. Please download our funding remit to learn more (Updated January 2026).
Artificial Intelligence
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT could bring benefits to Primary Bone Cancer research. It offers the opportunity to improve productivity and decision-making. However, there are risks associated with their use in medical research funding applications and in review of these proposals as well as limitations, which users need to be aware of.
BCRT supports a joint statement provided by the Research Funders Policy Group (made up of major science and health funders in the UK including the Association of Medical Research Charities) on a united approach around the use of generative AI tools in research funding. Read the joint statement here.
BCRT research applicants and reviewers should note the following:
- Maintenance of ethical, integrity and legal issues must remain the highest priorities to ensure we fund the highest standards of research.
- It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that their application is original, accurate and in line with all other BCRT guidance relating to research funding.
- The applicant must declare usage in the application form to ensure transparency, stating where the tools have been used to generate outputs in the application.
- Generative AI sources should be listed e.g. name the specific software model/s and software used, and how the content was generated should also be explained e.g. describing the prompt used.
- The applicant must adhere to policies on the use of generative AI tools provided by the Host Institution.
- Applicants need to carefully consider use of AI tools, using these responsibly and ensuring an awareness of the potential issues. If used, the information provided should always be valid and verified.
- Reviewers must not input any content from a BCRT funding application into generative AI tools to develop their review feedback. Doing so breaches confidentiality and research integrity requirements.
Applications are provided to reviewers by BCRT, acknowledging the reviewer’s own expertise and expert review feedback.
Please download our policy for artificial intelligence in research funding and review to learn more (Updated January 2026). As this is a fast moving field, we will endeavour to update our policy every six months.
Resubmission Policy
At the Bone Cancer Research Trust, we do not allow the resubmission of any previously unsuccessful proposals, unless you have been explicitly invited to resubmit.
Details of any requirements for resubmission, as requested by our Independent Scientific Advisory Panel, will be described in detail in the application and review feedback. You can download our resubmission policy here (updated March 2023).
Acceptable Costs
The Bone Cancer Research Trust is a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities and will fund direct costs of research only. We have developed guidance to aid applicants when completing the costings section of their application.
